Default 289 2bbl / 302 2bbl

Hey Guys,
I am in need of some advice. I swapped over my 289 for a 1970 302 bored out .030. I reused the intake manifold and carburator. I put a uego sensor on it and its running lean when its not at idle. Can the stock 2 bbl be re-jetted or should I just get a reman 2 bbl for that year motor?

You can rejet them but finding the jets can be a problem. The holley jets won't work. A 289 carb should work fine on a 302 though. Are you sure you don't have some vacuum leaks causing a lean condition?

The change from 289 to 302 is meaningless in terms of carb adjustment. You'll have to look farther, as suggested above.

The engine runs smooth and the idle is steady at 700. I dont hear a hissing noise or anything like that. I got a new pcv and hose. The exhaust line going to the choke is nice and tight, I guess I need to get a bottle of propane or something. I guess you guys have a point. I rev it hard and´it goes to the max lean. If I slowly rev it , it gets a little leaner the higher I go. Hmmmm, Any inexpensive way of checking for vacuum leaks?

Check fuel pressure and volume also. You may have a fuel pump that is weak and not supplying enough fuel over idle.

Man, I think you nailed it. I added a fuel filter before the fuel pump to protect it from dirt grime goo. I will remove it when I get home. See if that does it. Thanks.

Get a can of carb cleaner and spray around the base of the carb and throttle shaft pivots

Make sure your vacuum hoses are tight on their nipples.

I'd say scrap the 2bbl and go with a nice 4 bbl set up. Go big or go home.
Heck, you only use the back two barrels when you get your foot in it.

I feel the same way. However, this is my wife´s car. She is no speed demon. Stock is all she is getting. This will be her daily whip. The only thing we will upgrade is the sound system. She loves loud music. Other than that, its a point a to point b car.
