Default Engine shut off on me several times today

So I took a long (130 miles) trip yesterday with my 68 and everything was absolutely fine. No issues or whatsoever, running like a new car.

Today all of a sudden I had the car shut off on me three times. All three times it happened very shortly after departing. I routinely always let the car idle for a bit before I take off so it had at least somewhat warmed up.

The shutting off happened as I stepped on the gas.

Anyone have an idea what could be causing this all of a sudden?

did it shut off like turning the key off? or did it bog down then rev up and die or stumble?

It just died as if I turned the key off. Started right up again afterwards without any hiccups or other problems.

sounds like it could be ignition.

Are you running points and what type of coil?

I had an electronic ignition module installed a while ago. Does that help?

i had similar issues a few times.
Once it was a selfrouted (complete **** job) wire to ignition coil from ignition switch that dropped on header, burnt and shorted out. Only on accelleration
The other time it was a pertronix distributor (new). The ground cable for the module was attached to the screw that holds that vacuum canister. That was loose from factory. Any dramatic change in vacuum->car died ... was hard to find. the kinda loose canister gave that away
Check all your wiring ...

Thanks kalli!

Good news so far I guess. This morning I decided to take my daughter to school in the Stang just to test things a bit. Before leaving I made sure all 8 connectors were tight on the ignition and the other wiring was ok too. Some were a bit loose so I pushed them back on tight. Played with the throttle a lot and didn't have any issues this time.

Fingers crossed!

I had that problem once many years ago and it turned out to be a frayed capacitor lead in the distributor. When the spark advance would activate the wire would ground and stall the engine as though you turned the key off.
