Rebuild I6?
Yeah, I hate to go against Scott and say it really doesn't matter what color of primer is used. You are going to be covering it with color anyway. However, if you feel queezy about the primer color, then use black or gray for the darker colors.
Regarding the engine swap: I'd say cost is based on what he's going to use... if he is in the southern states, where junkyards are more likely to have some old stangs... I'd say do the conversion with all used parts. Get a drivetrain out of a F250/Ford Explorer/ whatever. It shouldn't cost that much with all used parts.
As for the color... I'd say that it matters only when you take rock chips into account. You don't want red/grey primer on a black car... the rock chips would show up like tiny billboards! Other than that, ask your painter like Scott said.
Oh, and that engine compartment was done over a period of 2 months.
Costs:
Ford Racing crate engine $3500
Paint/bodywork supplies: $250
Time/sleep Lots!
I wouldn't play with the I6... waste of money in my opinon. Go for the V8!

I was thinking of painting it a dark blue.
I guess i'm going with a black primer then.
I live in california, so there are alot of places where i could go and get used parts for my mustang.

You live in Cali... Leave that V6 alone! Go down to one of the junkyards, find a v8 coupe and start pulling parts! I lived out there for a few years, and I couldn't believe the deals in the scrap yards! Hell, I picked up a perfect hood for my '68 for $50.00!
Get busy!
P.S. I'll let you in on a little secret... 67-68 Cougars use the same front end components. Find yourself a nice power disk car and tear out the whole system.
