Could the timing cause a vibration?

As i asked before, when a smb is balanced during a rebuild, should the flywheel and balancer be bolted onto the crank during the rotation.

Well that looks like the right BF on the balancer...that's too bad.

I guess you'll have to do some more poking around.

Are you sure its firing on all 8? Start it up get out a squirt gun and spray it on the headers as it warms up does the water boil off them at the same rate? A non-contact temp gun would be better but if you don't have one pissing on it with the squirt gun may show which if any cylinders aren't firing

if the balancer is 28oz and the flywheel as well (i'm quite sure since it's 60s model), I'd say on top of what gun says contact the people who balanced your engine if you have the right parts on it, or if they balanced for this. I'm unsureabout how to balance an engine, since I'm not an engine buillder. I thought the internals should be balanced to 0 without damper and flywheel, and to this you add 28oz in front (balancer) and 28oz in back (flywheel). But I could be wrong ...

Right on

I got a Masters degree from Fresno State flying R/C planes.

I just thought of another thing to check. Make sure the damper wheel is clearing the very back of the water pump housing right past where the bolts go through on the bottom.

Its a larger diameter than the old one and it may be touching the housing or just clears by .002" and when it runs begins to bump into the water pump housing. I had to grind away a bit off the pump housing to get my Summit SFI approved big *** damper to fit.

I am running a very aggressive cam http://www.summitracing.com/parts/LUN-61003 and have had a few valve train problems in the past.

it uses a 351 firing order, could this contribute?

When you install the pressure plate to the flywheel did you use the alignment pins?

If the pressure plate was out of balance from the factory that would cause a vibration but I cant see that happening...I suppose its plausible.

what kind of vibration? fast and buzzy or slow and severe? is it shaking the whole car or can you just feel it through the floor boards? have you had someone look at the engine while it's showing symptoms?

the 351w firing order means that you need to move 4 plug wires around to account for the new firing order. did you do that?

ps, r/c helis are better. well at least harder and they crash better.

the vibration is a pulsating rythmic with what seems to be a low frequency. you only feel it through the floor boards and in the seat of your pants.

jcoby, heli's are too expensive for me now that i have the mustang. infact i have been thinking about getting the trucks out for a few laps at the Yuma Sand Dunes when i hit them up in a few weeks.

I have not had anyone look at it. i gave up on having anyone touch my car other than myself. i am always let down when i pay for service.
