Default 300hp from 289

hi all, i've been wanting a mustang for the last 15 years or so, and finally picking up a 66 c code with c4. although it is a c code someone put a holley 4 bbl 600cfm on there, not sure the exact model. it needs some work, as i cant afford a perfect one, but thats half the fun. anyways after i take care of some surface rust and a paint job, and some other small jobs, id like to work on improving the engine. as i stated it is a 289, other than the 4 bbl carb i believe it is all stock. i was wondering what you guys would suggest to get it to right around 300 hp, give or take, i will more than likely be rebuilding the engine so that i know the internals are good and new. and im looking for it to be a street driver, not going to race or drag or anything, just want enough power to have some fun( who doesnt). also, i was looking at getting the power disc brake kit from CSRP, the grab a trak suspension kit with the 5 leaf and larger sway bar and the interior super kit from mustangs plus, and was wondering if any of you have any experience with these products. thanks all in advanced for your help. - Tim

Hi,

I got 269 rwhp on the dyno with the configuration that you can see in my signature. I am happy with the results, this engine likes to take 5500+ RPM

thanks for the quick replies, and yeah i forgot to say that, a little over 300 at the shaft is what im looking for, the closer to it at the wheels the happier i'd be but i know im going to lose a bit of power with an automatic. someday i may try to do a t5 conversion but right now thats not in the plans. too many short term things to spend my money on. maybe when i get back from my next deployment i'll have the money. also, i cant remember what size diff is in the rear, im pretty sure its still the stock one in which case it has the 2.8:1 diff, how much does it cost to switch it to 3.55:1 or so, i can do the work myself and im not worried about losing mpg's, i get 45mpgs on my bike so it'll average out nice enough. thanks again

Anything can make power... The 289 will be able to make even 300whp with little effort and good planning.

The trick is to match the parts to each other. Figure out what heads you are planning on running, then match a cam to them, then match an intake and carb to the head/cam.

300 is easy. I could link you to a thread on another forum where a guy used an Edelbrock 600, Ford C9OZ-6250-C (hydraulic version of the 289 HP cam, very smooth and streetable) and stock iron heads which he port matched (his first try!) to his exhaust. Dyno pulled 321 hp.

Did the RBM Air gap fit under a standard hood? Where there any clearance issues? What did you use for air cleaners?

You're not getting 400hp out of a 302 at the crank with just heads and a cam....unless you dyno with engine without any accessories. But you won't get that far down the road with no alternator or water pump. 300rwhp is going to put you around 360 at the crank(give or take) with a beefy manual transmission.

300 at the crank is very achievable with good heads and a decent cam plus the other crap. With a 5spd it'd put the engine somewhere around 245rwhp(approx). Typically a little less with an automatic.
