Default Installing a new antenna

So I just got a new antenna for my '68 thinking it would be easy to replace the old broken one. However how do I get the old one off and the new one back on? Do I need to take off the wheel / fender?

Now that I looked at it it seems a bit more complicated than I thought...

Its not complicated, it wire routs through passenger side forward door piler and the through the inner fender. Its easy to get out in two pieces but a PIA to re route the wire. May be easier to remove the fender. Personaly i am using an amplified antenna so i can hide it and welded up the antenna hole.

Jeepers! Antenna installation is easy. The nut and bezel slide off the top. The T bracket under the fender cams sideways on the mast to slide through the hole. slide the cable out.

Have a bright light inside the car so you can see the hole on the side panel and thread the new cable in. Make sure the grommet is properly installed in the hole, connect the cable to the radio, slide the base of the antenna and T bracket through the hole, and install the bezel and nut. The whole job shouldn't take more than a half hour.

2+2GT Excuse my ignorance but does it mean I have to take the fender off (and / or other parts) because if so I'll need to have it done by someone else. I don't have the tools for that or a space where I can even do it.

You only need to remove the inner splash shield. About 6 or 7 sheetmetal screws (one is inside the engine bay up near the cowl). Then you can see the antenna and the hole for the cable.

This would be the easiest way, but you may not evern have to remove anything. Just take your time and have patience. When you lift the old one out,you will see how you can finagle the braket below sideways so that it will lift right out. Again, take your time and be careful.

No, my description was complete. No need to remove the fender, kick panel, or even the splash shield. Really, this job takes about half an hour. If you weren't on the wrong coast, I'd put yours on for nothing.

2+2GT, your description was complete IF it has the factory antenna. If it's aftermarket it may or may not work.

Even a K-Mart antenna installs from the top. Imagine trying to sell an aftermarket antenna that requires removing the fender.

If there's any doubt, you can get a really nice repro for $20.
