Default Rear Gears

Hey guys, Im about to order some gears and everything for the install. I just dont know what all I actually need. I'm going with 4.11 richmonds and a ford racing trac loc. The guy wants about $1000 for everything and install if I pull the rear end myself and bring it to him. Sound good? I would do it myself, but I dont want the rear end sounding like a supercharger within a year or so.

Any suggestions?

Oh, the 4.11's are going in for the AOD install that is waiting in the garage.

Are you planning on using this as a freeway driver? 4.11's are really short, even with an AOD. Generally automatics don't need quite as much gear because of the torque multiplication properties of the torque converter. I'd think 3.55's or 3.73's would be better suited to an all around driver that will hit the freeway regularly. And if it's not on the freeway, then why bother with an AOD?

I got a tru track diff it was about 500 and about 300 to install gears...a 1000 bucks is kinda pricey if the diff only cost 400.

Have you considered the true trac? I highly suggest you look at this link before fully committing to the trac loc. http://www.eaton.com/EatonCom/Produc...trac/index.htm

I have the .63 od in my t5 your aod is .67 od....I could run 4.11s and be fine but I went with 3.80s. I think you could run 4.11s and be okay if 50% or less is freeway....if it concerns you 3.80s would safe I wouldn't run anything higher than 3.80 (for example 3.55s) Its not worth the effort then.

So 3.80s are safe and 4.11s might be a bit high sometimes but do able i think.

Well, more like $500 for the diff, then $200 for the gears, maybe $100 for assoreted bearings, etc. which leaves $200 for expert assembly. I haven't even accounted for any other parts he may need.

Well if the 1000 includes the gears too and 500 for a diff then that's not bad...I thought maybe he procured the gears himself...
Either way its reasonable...its not insane

How about this guy. I have heard good things about him and I have emailed him with quick responses.

Until it doesn't work, and you have to send it back to him from HW. Stick locally with this.
I think gears on an 8in with trac loc is about 1100-1200 with all parts and pulling and installing. Pull and install yourself and save about 150-200 if you re-install and use your own lube and limited slip additive.

There are a few guys on the 69stang site that have gone with the 4.11 gears and aod that seem more than happy. Also the rpm calcolator puts me right at 2400 on the freeway at 70mph. It actally ended up better than what im at now with the 2.75ls and 1 to 1 with the fmx in 3rd.

I like a taller tire in the rear so that helps a little.

So I have another guy that was reccomended by a 69 fastback owner that says he will install whatever i bring him for about $300 in labor. So Im weighing my options vs. my wallet.

anyone have experience with the eaton true trac? It looks better than the clutch disc trac loc. Opinions?

I believe Gun Jam runs one. The only thing remotely negative I've heard about them is that they're not built to stand up to strip duty with sticky tires. But if that's your plan, you should be thinking about a locker anyway.
