Default carb?

The 390 im putting in my 68 coupe didn't have a good carb on it and i have a stock ford 4 barrel but i was wondering what would be another carb that would be good to put on it instead of the stock 4 barrel?

First question, which carb do you have? If the motor is mostly stock, a 1.12" venturi Autolite 4100 would work great for you.

Otherwise, consider a Summit 600CFM carb. Annular boosters and a modified Holley design with an Autolite-esque removable top cover. I've talked to a guy who recently put one on his 347 and he's very happy with it.

The 390GT installed in Mustangs always had a Holley.

Not my favorite. Depends how original you want to be. Holleys can be a maintenance pain.

Are the above comments typical of the Summit carb? I like the design features, but have never seen one used.

They're relatively new, but I haven't heard anything bad about them. Just the one guy on another forum who slapped one on his 347, and it runs like a top. For the price, I think the features are hard to beat.

IMHO the old Ford (Autolite) carburetors were quite good although they lacked some of the tunability that comes with some aftermarket carbs. If you have one in good shape, they are very straight forward to rebuild.

If this carb does NOT work out for you, I would recommend a Holley. I have rebuilt and dialed in BEAUCOUP carburetors during my 60 years on God's Green Earth and the Holleys are tough to beat IMHO.
