Default c4 goes into neutral by itself

my dad told me the trans was rebuilt and he drove it for a few months with no problems then i stored it for a couple years in my garage and when i would take it out for a drive around the block it would sometimes go into neutral when i would come to a stop. it did it alot when i would be driving up my driveway (slight hill). my dad drove the mustang like a old lady so i know he did not abuse it so what do you guys think it is?

Does it physically go into neutral, meaning you have to put the lever back into gear? If so, you have a linkage or motor mount problem. If you come to a stop and it takes a second to re-engage with no input from you, first, check the fluid level as low fluid can cause one to do this on corners and at stops. Check it in park (Chrysler and some cars require it to be in neutral) with the engine idling warm. Warm is after 15 minutes of driving. Repost your results here.

If it isnt the selector moving on its own, and it just stops working that is because there isnt enough fluid at the clutch packs to lubricate and hold them. Causes include but are not limited to:

Low fluid level.
Clogged filter.
Weak front pump.
Internal pressure leak.
Maladjusted linkage.
Sticking valves in the valve body.

FYI C4s are easy to rebuild if you have some mechanical knowledge already, they dont require much in the way of special tools. There are videos on how to do it, and if you get into trouble on it I would lend some help over the phone. Chances are it just needs some fluid and a filter change.

thank you for the support guys but i cant check the fluid because unfortunately i have not started my mustang in a year and a half when i swapped in my 9" rear. i need to have a driveshaft made because the stock one i had was too long. right now it has the third member from the cougar i removed this 9" rear from and from the single bald tire it had on the rear (lol) im sure its a open diff. Do you guys know if the driveshaft will be the same length with the nodular trac lok third member and my c4 trans compared the open third member and the c4 trans? please help me with that guys so i know if i can buy the driveshaft i need right now so i can work on my trans. i wish i could explain things better lol

If you look for my "C4 Problems" thread, it might be of some help. Your situation sounds similar to mine. I think my problem and ultimately the transmissions failure was due to bad seals on the forward piston. I haven't fixed the problems though, it's on hold as I have 3 tests, a project, and normal homework to finish up. I'm not sure if I'll even put it back together. I might just throw a manual in it.
