nuetral safety switch problem

nuetral safety switch problem
I have a 66 mustang with a 6 cyl and c4 trans..I pulled the neutral safety switch as it was trashed.. Is there suppsosed to be a key in the keyway notch in the new switch and the notch on the shaft?.. Mine does not have one and I suspect this might be part of the problem.
