does the clutch fork bolt anywhere inside the bellhousing? this sounds like such a stupid question.

No. It clips to the fulcrum, which is riveted to the bell.

i supppose i am missing where it clips.

There were two systems. The 64-67 had a wire retainer that hooked on a small tab on the fulcrum, and starting in 68, there was a square hole in the fulcrum for a flat spring riveted to the release lever.

64-67:


The repro lever I am familiar with comes with the early style wire holes, and the later spring clip installed. Then you can use whichever you want.
