Default Novice engine builder head advice

Hey guys, so I am still really new to rebuilding engines and have never done a 302 before. 300, I know inside and out and all the power adders but 302 are a league above me.

So here is my question. I inherited a '66 coupe that used to be an I-6 and a previous owner dropped a 302 in it. He did everything halfway too, so I am working on fixing and making all that stuff safe. What I have figured out is that I have a 1969 engine out of a Torino/Fairlane that I believe is a 302 but find links online that say the stamping can mean 351. The heads that are on it are stamped under the cover as 289. I purchased a set of iron heads from a guy at a swap meet a while ago when I first heard I was getting the car and that it was blowing smoke last time it was run. The guy selling had replaced his 80's model mustang heads with aluminum and was just getting rid of these old ones. So here are the numbers:

Engine: C9OE-6015-C
Current heads- C8OE with a stamping of 1A and 289 under the valve covers
New heads E7TE with a 14 stamped under the valve covers

Now I am going to have one of the sets of heads redone, just wondering which ones. I am looking at going back with standard pistons, stock cam/crank, etc... I only picked up the new ones because I had heard the horror stories about the original heads not having hardened seats and wearing out really fast. Is that a problem with the year the original heads are made? I am finding different people saying different things and hoping I can find some light here on these boards.

If I do end up using the new heads with a stock cam, am I looking at new pushrod sizes, new springs, anything odd like that? Like I said I am a novice at this, so I am thinking to stick with the originals but there is less fun there and less chance to learn.

Help?

This is a 351W. Notice how the deck is 1" above the timing cover flange.

The 302 was even.

Thanks for the reply and pics, so I definitely have a 302.

Any advice on the heads? Both are stock, not ported/polished or anything like that and I don't plan on having any heavy work done to either. So for each head to be stock, is it even worth going to the new E7TE? Did stock 1968 Ford heads already have hardened seats, or is there a way for me to check.

E7 are stock late 302 iron heads, not really worth the swap. You could try and find some GT40s, but if you get GT40P's you'll need p headers. Otherwise just have them reuilt or buy some used aftermarket heads.

too bad you are not in AZ. I have a set of fully worked 289 heads that i would let go for cheap. They are ported, polished, have screw in studs and have a new 3 angle valve job with dual luinati springs.

I just bought new aluminum heads and will be getting rid of these. i can ship but i dont know how much it would cost
