UnFreakinBelievable Overheating
Well I say this while knocking on wood but it looks like my pump is setup for a counterclockwise pulley. Talk about chasing your tail, from headgaskets, to radiator to cooling fan this had me totally confused. You just assume your pump is flowing the right direction and the symptoms were just so random.
Still not sure how I got 100 troble free miles out of a backwards pump to begin with but I'm glad I caught it before I took it for a long trip.
For everyones reference its a CWP458 pump.
Anyone need a new counterclockwise pump?

At low speeds on cooler days the inefficiency of the reversed vanes would not be too bad. Sustained speed, on warmer days, and you'd be getting cavitation instead of circulation. Heck, the 289HP had a special pump with curved vanes, to reduce high speed cavitation.
I'd move to Australia but then I would have to swap out my toilets. That may be more work then the water pump swap.
Hmmmm what to do...
On a serious note, my timing cover is from a H.O. 289 on my 68 302 not that that should make any difference.

Necessary ? I don't know about that. It still helps getting out the air faster. Especially if the car has a rack in its stance. Then you have a really level engine, or higher in the back than front. Hole or no, that bubble won't defy physics. Either way, it's still a good idea to leave the cap off to refill coolant as it burps. Otherwise you burp a ton of air and your a 1/2 gallon low.

When will this end????
I just picked up the identical part number to what was originaly on my car from Mustangs Unlimited.
I took off my current pump and removed both back plates. They were identical!!!!
Sooooooooo I pulled the "high flow" thermostat and took it into the house to cook it.
I set it to "Poultry"(180) and it didnt open...so I moved it to "Lamb chops" (190deg...still nothing...then I cranked it to Charbroiled Steak and still nothing.
Well, that actually makes sense, it worked for the first 100 miles and just started pulling this crap.
Putting the "new" old water pump back on and shelling out the $5 for a Ford thermostate.
Sometimes I really suck at life.
One question, could a completely blocked thermostat cause the lower hose to become hotter then the top? I guess it could because that was the only place for the heat to go that wasnt blocked off.
This thermostat does not have a bleed hole.
