Lightbulb Steering Too Hard

When i bought my 68 i was told the power steering pump or gear box was going bad so they took it of and now the car had no power steering. The steering is now way to hard i dont think it should be this hard even with no power steering. I still drive it. It is still driveable but it is just to hard to turn the wheel. Any idieas why or what could be wrong?

get a larger steering wheel if its small, and make sure all the bolts are tight in the linkage is tight and theres no play, make sure your alignment is correct. Make sure you also have proper tire pressure. Because were all used to such easy steering now a days, non powered steering feels tough, but you get used to it quick!

Is it harder in one direction than the other? Do just what 1967coupeon101 said and make sure your linkage system is solid.

One thing to keep in mind is that the ratios were different between power streering and manual streering. The PS boxes were 4 turns from lock to lock and the MS were 5 turns lock to lock. So a PS will be harder to turn with out the assist.

+1 on alignment specs - you need to speak to a guy who knows what he's doing with the older cars.

Tire preasure is good, Aligment was just done, Wheel is a good size. im guessing it is the ratio because ive driven a factory non-power steering mustang and it is not as hard as mine. thanx

The standard non-power gearbox was 19:1. The power steering gearbox was 16:1. The GT and mach1 used the exact same 16:1 gearbox, with slightly different bearing preloads. If your steering is harder than a GT or mach1, there is something wrong with it.

post your wheel alignment specs. not enough caster will make the steering heavier.

A power steering car is harder the steer than a non power steering car when the PS is not working because of the ratio.

I have manual steering on mine with the power steering box. I like the quicker ratio and its not that hard to steer except when trying to back into a parking place.
