Default C4 leak only in drive

My C4 only leaks when in drive and up front from the torque converter area. Is it a bushing for the input shaft? Best to just drop it and have it rebuilt? The car was raced for a long time and then sat for years before I got it and actually made it run again. I believe it a stall converter (not stock) and I don't know what else has ben done to the tranny. Thanks.

Probably the front seal....I am assuming you mean it's leaking at the bottom of the bell housing near or at the inspection plate?

To my knowledge no way to get at it other than to pull it, remove the torque converter, etc. Of course if you had plans to pull the motor soon that would work also :-)

However, once you get behind the converter it's a relatively easy / inexpensive job.

If it shifts fine then i wouldnt rebuild it. I would pull it out and change the seal and change the filter. Put it back in and get all of the life i can out of the tranny. If i didnt need to rebuild it i would rather spend my money elsewehere on the car.

yea, thats exactly where the leak is coming from. the bottom of the bellhousing. I'm not sure if it shifts ok. gotta drive it once more now thats its running ok.

my plans one day are the 460/C6, but i have no time to take anything like that on just yet. I want the car in good mechanical condition the way it is so that it can be moved and/or driven without much worry till I can get to the big project. little by little lol.

thanks. i'll see if it shifts good tomorrow, then i'll just buy the seal and do it. if not, i'll just rebuild it for about $200. not too much loss there.

plans are to get it presentable.

I guess my question is how much is it leaking?

My front tranny seal was leaking a little for a long time before I did anything about it. I made sure to put something down on the garage floor when I parked to keep it from making a mess of my floor and I kept an eye on my fluid level but other than that I didn't do a thing about it until I got around to a point where I was pulling the motor anyway.

not to sound drastic, but it makes a huge mess everywhere it goes. it is a constant drip only when in drive or reverse.

i actually got a chance to see how it drives and it doesnt look good.

there is a horrible screech when engaging into second or third, but after that it goes. sometimes it just revvs and then screeches and takes off. something is bad and my guess is the torque/stall converter.

if i had to put it in easier terms, imagine driving a stick shift and purposely not using the clutch correctly... thats how this car acts lol.

That sounds like the clutch pack is slipping. So it looks like its time to rebuild it.

Front seal is likely but don't forget the front pump as another possibility. Screeching when shifting? Trans already out? Only $200? How many more reasons do ya need to go into it? I couldn't imagine NOT overhauling it. How many times in its life will it be pulled? If once, that's the time to make sure it lasts.

true true. i may just tow it up to my other place instead of my hopes of getting it to run as is. I'm just sayin I dont wanna put too much effort into the current 302/C4 when I know later down the road i'm doing 460/C6 anyway. plus when everything is apart, it will be necessary to do lots and lots of rust repair. talk about swiss cheese. I'm surprised the car actually drove me home from the backyard I took it out of.

So... here's the ultimate question for everyone:

if you were in my shoes, would you make the necessary repairs to make it mechanically sound now or wait to do the 460/c6 when i get the time? The tranny is the only thing keeping it from driving smoothly. surprisingly the 302 is running good and the 9" rear is strong (did a massive burnout after finding out about the tranny issues hehe)
