Yeah thats another reason...I dont want to go too crazy with it.

Thats best I have seen 1/4 oz provides 800PPM when mixed with 1 qt of oil...Thats what I have been trying to hunt down and they did it for me..

Thanks for the link

I don't want to stir the s**t but,, what is it that this crap supposedly does anyways? I haven't used this stuff in any of the motors that I have built in the last 30 years....and I don't see a problem.

Well supposedly it prevents flat tappet cams from wearing out prematurely.

Apparently our oil used to have sufficient ZDDP levels to protect the cams up until recently. Then some Hippie ahole from jerkwater USA wanted to save the world and made up some BS claim after smoking a bowl that ZDDP in the oil was bad for catalytic converters and just plain bad for the earth man. The EPA asked what weed he smoked and said "Well thats scientific enough for us" and they banned the crap in safe quantities.

So now oil has like 700PPM and word is that flat tappets should have 1400 to 1800PPM

I should go to the CA EPA and claim that Central Ca farmers are releasing mega tons of dihydrogen monoxide by pumping it from the earths crust. Im sure they will ask what weed I smoked before deciding if its true...Ill just tell em the **** they grow in the national park and they will hail me as a god among men...

It's an "extreme pressure" additive, for use where there is heavy sliding contact . . . like with flat tappet cams ands heavy spring pressures. It provides a sort of solid lubrication above the point where liquid oil can.

This heavy sliding contact is why you break really big cams in with light springs or at least take the inners out of double/triple springs or us very low ratio rockers - those techniques reduce the sliding/scuffing effect by reducing the force pushing the lifters down into the lobes.

Now that no OE mfr that I know of uses flat tappet cams in their OHV car and light truck engines, there is far less heavy sliding friction to be dealt with, so the demand for 1500-ish concentrations of ZDDP isn't there for any vehicles just entering service. Like it or not, attrition is reducing the number of cars that do benefit from it.

If you've ever used GM's EOS, you probably added this stuff. I don't think I still have any of that stuff left over from when I last built an engine, else I'd go look.

I've run VR1 in my 331 for a good 15k mi with no problems.

BTW, Valvoline is offering a rebate on VR1 right now. Buy two cases and they rebate you for the second case. I just picked two up
