Default 1964 Mustang question.

Hello Mustang Forums,

I am beginning to restore a 1964 1/2 Coupe, and had a question to ask of you all.

My Mustang is titled as a 1964, which I find odd, because everywhere I have read says that all 64 stangs where titled as 65s. I am sure that it is just a clerical error happening before I purchased the car, but I was wondering what else could it be, if anything. The Title is clear and valid. Thanks for your answers.

Somebody at the DMV window did that. Ford titled them all as "1965". It was considered an early introduction of the "1965 Mustang". I knew a Ford engineer who was involved. He was emphatic on that point. No such thing as a "1964 1/2". That was developed in the 70's as a sort of shorthand to describe the early 1965 generator-equipped cars.

my VIN starts with 5 and the original title said 1965, so when imported into ireland they put it down as a 1965 car, no matter what I said about the car being built and first registered in 64. I'm with 2+2, whatever the opinion of that DMV clerk was ....

That's about what I figured, someone before me owning the car mistyped it on the title. No biggie, just wondering what some other takes on it would be.

I got it pretty reasonable considering the condition, running original 289 two barrel, original automatic, and no exterior rust other then the bottom of the door skins, and even that isn't to bad. Probably get some skins or something.

Thanks again.

If its a 64.5 2v car, wouldn't it be a 260?

ya, agree. i think there was an A-code as well, but that would have been a 4barrell.
what's the first 7 letters/numbers in your VIN?

5F07C are the first 5 numbers in the vin.

According to Standard Catalog of Ford (4th Edition) there were 5 Engine choices in 64 1/2 Mustangs.

The Six (U), 260 2 Barrel (F), 289 2 Barrel (C), 289 4 Barrel (A), 289 Hi-Po (K)

Which means I took the vin to mean 5 (1965(64 1/2 too)) F (Dearborn) 07 (2 Door Hardtop) C (289 2 Barrel).

I could be wrong, but I've been going by that book for as long as I have been interested in cars.

Thanks for the replies
