Strange Engine Problem
That's called "it has a carburetor." They need time to get to NORMAL operating temperature. When cold they need to warm up, when sitting after hot they need to run a bit to get the fuel and heads back to the right temp.
lol please, if this was a simple issue of "the car is warming up" i wouldnt have posted. ive owned the car for quite a while. its electric choke functions flawlessly. what im saying is how can the engine shake and feel like its running on 6 cylinders for a few minutes and then all of a sudden miraculously bring itself back into its smooth normal idle.
and no, each time its done this it has been a hot start, i.e. driving around for 30 minutes, park somewhere for short while like the grocery store, go back out and it acts up. only this time it didnt correct itself.
its exactly the same sound and feel that it was when it had 2 bad spark plugs. so needless to say, that was the first thing i replaced when trying to diagnose this. new plugs, new wires, new coil, new fuel filter....nothing.

So you're saying the problem is NOT going away now? If that's the case then it's fuel related(you already ruled out ignition). Change filter, rebuild carb etc. Are you sure the pump is working properly?
exactly, every other time its done this by some act of God it just fixes itself, so ive just ignored it. but this time it didnt fix itself. when i look down into the carb and blip the throttle i see 2 very healthy squirts.
Jon mentioned possible issue with the pertronix. They are just an electronic swap out for points arent they?? (I've never actually seen one). So no points but you still have a distributor cap? Have you checked it and the rotor?
it sure sounds like fuel vaporisation from the way it does it after everything is heat soaked.
What carb is on it and do you have a spacer under it? does it actually start easy (or as per normal) or is it reluctant to start as well?

its a holley 570 and i have a 1" phenolic spacer under it. i wish i had a spare pertronix unit to throw in there but i dont and of course no one is open on sunday
Do you still have your old points? You could try to switch those in to see if the Pertronix is the problem (I'm assuming you were talking about the Ignitor and not Flame Thrower). I kept mine when I switched in my Ignitor just in case. My car did this to me when the points were bad before I put in the Ignitor but I don't remember if it only happened when the car was hot.
