i was just curious as to whats the widest tires you can put on a 65 mustang without cutting and welding everything? I currently have 205 on the front and 235 on the back.

On my 65 FSTBK I have 15 x 7 wheels , 205-70 15's on the front, 225-60 15's on the rear and all is well my car is a daily driver

 

I have 235 60 15 on the rear of mine and it doesn't rub. I can see how it might on some cars though.

 

I have 225/45-17 on front and 245/45-17 on the back. You might go a little bigger on the back by playing with the wheel offset, but I would guess 275 would be about max. My rear tires are really close on the outside since the Nitto 555Rs bulge at the sidewalls. There is about an inch of room inside though, so you might play with the offset and get a 275 tire under there. I run 17X8 wheels.

How do you like the 555's i have been thinking about putting them on the back because i need more traction. If i even get on it a little im all over the place.

 

275's fit fine.

 

It depends on wheel backspace etc. I don't think your going to fit any 275 15s.

 

I ran Fusion ZRi before, which is an 'ultra high performance' tire (read - cheap) like the Nitto 555s (which I have on my wife's 06 GT). They did better when they were real warm (like 85+ outside). They didn't hook at all in first, eventually hooked in second, and were slippery in 3rd. I could punch it at about any speed in 1st or 2nd and break them loose.

With the Nitto 555Rs, 1st will hook up when warm - it will spin for about 50' if I let the clutch out easy at about 2500 RPM then lean into it (though I can still just sit and spin if I mash it). 2nd hooks up pretty well, when the tires are good and hot. It still spins some if I punch it at about 3500 RPM, but it eventually hooks and goes (which it didn't before). If I get it moving (about 30 MPH) in 2nd then punch it (like coming onto the freeway) I can hear the tires spin a little but it moves out fast (the front end gets light and it wants to go the right lane on its own). It is pretty solid in 3rd. That is all on the street. No track experience and I don't do burnouts at the stop lights to get them hot! I run them at 28#.

I would say that they made a substantial difference. From what I've read, there are other tires that hook better but 1) the 555R was the only tire I could find in 245/45-17 and 2) they last a lot longer on the street than the other D/Rs.
