68 Center Console

68 Center Console
I'm new to the site and a new owner of a 68 fastback. I have been restoring old cars for about 15 years, mostly Olds 442's.
I bought this mustang because the body is rust free and it was a great car for the price... and I just love the looks.
My question is... does anyone make a manual top plate for the center console? The car now has a C4 (I think) and I would like to convert to a T5
The only problem is that the center console is in great shape and I don't want to cut it and I would really like to use it if possilbe.

It probably depends on what shifter you use.
I went with a Hurst and the standard rubber bellows boot fits in
the hole (no cutting) where the auto shifter bezel was, and looks like the stock setup in 1971.

The 68 console was unique, and you'd need to find some very difficult and desirable parts to switch fron auto trans to manual, perhaps an entire used console would be required. The 71-73 console was the same either way, so that doesn't help.
If you can find the proper trim and pad for the 68 console, you'll have no problem, the 64-68 boot will work, and the T5 goes right through the stock opening.

An original '68 console is good condition is hard to find. Do not cut that console up! Instead sell it and buy one like this:

In the end, you'll appreciate having the built-in arm rest.
