Default 289 engine question

I know alot about old and new mustangs but on the other hand i dont know alot about them, so i am working on a 67 coupe and putting a v8 in a six cyl mustang. My question is with the base line hp of my v8 at 225, im adding a performer intake, holley 4bbl carb, rv or bigger cam, long tube headers, what kind of hp am i going to be pushing out of the ole 289?

that 225 was measured in the factory with no equipment (alternator ... .) attached. And i think that was already the A-Code (4bbl)
so the same engine measured today would probably be around 175 HP

with let's say a comp cams 256 (already too mcuh?), performer intake, 4bbl carb, headers you will probably push it to 225 realworld HP. If you port the heads and match it to the intake it might get up to 300 (no unheard of)

well, check exactly what carb it is, as overcarbing is a huge problem.

I think theres no way to get 300HP out of a 289 without seriously working the stock heads or replacing them. Not a hope with just a cam/intake/exchaust and carb change

if you port the crap out of stock heads, that might work. If you go down the cheap route for heads (GT40), then it could work.

If you replace the whole upper half (aftermarket alum heads, cam, intake, carb) as well as exhaust. you are in business.
The problem here is that the bottom end is said to not be trusted above 5500-6000 rpm. which is a killer if you try to squeeze HPs out of it.

new alum heads are around 1200-1400$, so with that, cam, intake, carb, headers you will probably put down 2000$+ without labour to acgieve this goal.

you might manage for half the money when going for GT40s or even less if you do some serious port work in your original heads.
I was just about to buy a new set of alum heads and a used complete engine with those headswas for sale for 2000$ locally. So I was lucky ...

Well ... let's see what the others have to say ...
