Default Door Weatherstrip

Another easy job turns into a........

I installed the weatherstripping on my door, only the passenger door for now, and you have to really slam the door to get it to close all the way. I know it is really tight up towards the front of the door and not so much at the bottom or towards the back, near the latch as I can see light from the inside.

I'm really not sure how to fix this without hacking up the weatherstripping. I afraid that will look like crap, and I can't adjust the doors without throwing the lines off. The door closed really nice before the weatherstripping was on. Has anyone had similar issues?

Any ideas would help. Thanks.

My experience is that after while, the gasket takes a 'set' and fits better. Was it a Carpenter seal or brand X?

That's what I'm hoping for. I'm not sure of the brand, I'll look when I get home.

I looked last night for a manufacturer and couldn't find one. I tossed the bag it came in and this stuff was bought awhile ago, in a kit. It did have the "genuine" Ford tag in the bag, fwiw. It looks like decent quality and the fit on the door is perfect. I guess I'll let 'er sit and it'll maybe form fit better. My trunklid was the same way. When I first fit the ws on, it was super tight, now it is becoming a bit more normal. That was like a year ago though.

Thanks.

give it a few weeks to get that form fit. Be patient, the last thing you want to do is adjust the door and screw with your lines.

I know. I have nightmares about that.

Thanks for giving me early nightmares...

I installed weatherstripping on my jeep and at first you really had to SLAM the doors to get them to close. But over a few months it has begun to set, still kinda hard though. I guess it just takes time, which sucks.

Yeah something I really didn't think about when I was fitting everything before paint. I wish I would have of done a "dry" run with the weatherstripping on, not to mention all the rubber bumpers that go everywhere too, to see how it all aligns up.

Compared to the old stuff that I took off, which was nearly flat, if this gives at all, I'll think I'll be good. For those interested, I'll keep you all informed.

Not much you could do to help it, besides let it sit. Test fitting with the weatherstripping would've been a pain as well as time consuming. Also if you used an adhesive when test fitting, the weatherstripping might get ruined when removing it. I haven't istalled weatherstripping on a mustang yet, so I wouldn't know much about the installation.
