Default Exhaust

Hey guys, I am interested in replacing the entire exhaust system in my '65 coup with a 289. The car has the GT style set up with duals running through the rear roll pan and the trumpet tips.

My question is has anyone used one of the "bolt on" kits available with good success and which one? This will be my first attempt at this type of work so I am really looking for something that doesn't require much modification.

Thanks

The Motive kit is excellent.

The Motive kit is a good option, but I prefer to have exhaust systems fabricated in a shop with the car present. If necessary, bring the mufflers to the shop. Any good muffler shop should be able to weld you a decent system within a day.

Seriously, no welding is required with the Motive systems, unless you are going "show-correct", eliminating clamps. Custom, on-the-spot systems are no guarantee of good systems, either, because they are totally dependent on the skill of the installer, and whether he's hung over, etc. I have seen some real crap custom-bent systems.

How well does a kit, from lets say MagnaFlow, fit from header to trumpet?

I just installed a Magnaflow kit (X pipe) on my 65 attached to Doug Thorley headers. It's a great fit with a couple of minor exceptions. The kit seems to be centered on the gas tank. The problem, the gas tank ain't centered so this took a bit of tweaking to center the exhaust to the car and not the tank - use the rear springs for guidance. You'll have to be able to weld the connections at the headers or manifolds. The rear hangers took a bit of creativity as well. I simply welded the supplied hangars to the clamps that hold the extensions to solve mine. All minor overall. Was it worth the hassle and $$? Every time I fire it up!

That's how I had mine done. Got a good shop in my area and provided them with the mufflers and the tailpipes I wanted and done in a day.

i think it really is that simple:
either
get the motive kit
or
buy mufflers (any of the magnaflow, dynomax, flowmaster) and weld it all into place with custom piping (costly but very good as well).

I'm surprised noone mentioned the Arvinrude? original K-code system yet :-)

The Arvinode was the K code exhaust system 10/15/64 - 3/22/65. Prior to that, it had a transverse system similar to the 67-69 system.
