Default 302 help and info.

well i just finished tearing apart my car to rebuild the motor. I have a 1967 mustang coupe and i was told that it had the original motor. I pulled it apart and found out it was a 1968 302 motor. However it had on it a 289 intake with a 2bbl carb. Also the heads matched the block because they were 1968 4 bbl heads. I have a edelbrock1212 intake which will fit. I just want to know the difference in the 289 and 302 and if i will have to order different parts since you can interchange some part because they fit either way. I know the bore is the same.... are the valves? Also i know the stroke is bigger on the 302. I would just like some help because i was going to put a edelbrock performer cam also new time chain and edelbrock carburetor... but what size? Also headers will be added. Any info. or help is appreciated.

IIRC intake and heads are interchangable. 302 crank and connecting rods are different from 289.

That's the only difference, really. If you didn't replace the rods or crank, it's possible to rebuild and not know if it's a 289 or 302.

The 302 balancer is heavier than the 289, but has the same 28oz imbalance, and you could use either.

a 500cfm carb will work. if you have one lying around use it and see how you get on. the 289 4barrell were usually 480cfm. really depends on engine and carb. which one is it?

in addition to the changes at some stage the balancer was 3 bolt (to attach to crank) and the newer ones 4 bolt (my 66 289 was 3 bolt, my 71 302 is 4 bolt). so again difference in the crank
other than that just as 2+2 says everything interchanges

My setup (though you wouldn't know it to look at my sig pict...kinda looks store bought):

67 Mustang
68 302 Block
66 289 Timing cover
76 351 Heads
89 T-5 Trans

Yea...there pretty interchangable. I have 5 different Fords "living on" under my hood
