Lightbulb 351c Exhaust/Muffler question

So my next project is going to be my exhaust system and I think I've got a pretty good idea what I'm going for, but I just have a few questions.

I'm running a 351c 2v (stock), with these headers.....

I'm not overly concerned with performance as I am never going to race or anything...... just going for a nice rumble at idle and something I can still hear the radio with at 60mph. I'm looking at a 2.5", H-pipe with either dynomax or magnaflows (I HATE the Flowmaster "tin can" sound) but just wanted to ask a couple questions before I buy.

1. Is there any difference in sound between the round and oval mufflers? If so, what is it?

2. Dynomax vs Magnaflow? They seem to be pretty close. Anyone have a preference towards one or the other..... and why?

Any other tips on exhaust related items are appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Your plan sounds pretty good so far. Going with 2.5" exhaust and an H-Pipe sounds perfect for your 68. You have plenty of roon in that respect.
As for the answers to your questions I'll give you my 2 cents.

#1-From my experience and considering space issues the only round muffler that would fit our cars are the Thrush Glasspack Mufflers and you say you don't want loud and those are going to be loud. I had those on my first Mustang back in the day when I wanted loud. So if you want to be able to control the sound/noise level you should probably stick with an oval muffler.

#2-Have no experience with Magnaflow, but before my current exhaust I had a set of the Dynomax Superturbo 3 chamber mufflers on my car and they sounded pretty nice. More of a melow turbo sound.

Not sure what you have in mind for tailpipes, but I have Dr. Gas aluminized tailpipes and have had them on my car for the last 10 years and they still look as new as the day I bought them. But they are'nt cheap.

The Mac Performance Tailpipes are a littler cheaper.

Kbryan, If I could jump in here for a minute, how was the fitment of those headers. I'm doing a cleveland style motor in my 67 and have to start to find headers. Any problems with them, or clearance issues. do u have power steering? automatic?

They fit much better than I was expecting for fairly cheap headers. Had to take a hammer to them a bit on the driver's side but other than that, not bad. Only had to cuss a few times to get them to go in..... I consider that a success!

I don't have PS. The car was an automatic when the headers were installed, but I have since converted it to T5 manual with hydraulic clutch.

Rad..... thanks for the input! I'm really leaning towards the Magnaflows right now but the Dynomax seemed like a very similar concept.

As far as the tailpipes go..... I'm planning to have this done at a shop so they will take care of that. I am just providing the mufflers (for sound) and some tips (for that sexy look )

Probably a stupid question...... but does the side of the input/output on the mufflers make any difference? Or is that just for the routing of the pipe? And if that's the case..... is there a preferred inlet/outlet side on a 68 coupe?

I bought a full Pypes exhaust and mufflers, and a set of Hedman headers, for my 351C in a 1971 Mach 1. I haven't got the exhaust in yet, but the headers are in. I hope to get it finished this weekend.

The Pypes kit appears to be of great quality, no problems so far getting it to fit.
