Default Issue with my dipstick

Funny right? I'm just about ready to put my new 408w stroker motor into my 65 fastback but I can't find a dipstick that will fit. It's a 1994 351w block that has the stick going through the timing cover and I've bought two dipsticks off summit.com, one was a Spectre and the other a Milodon and both of which the housings were too thick to fit into the timing cover hole. Any advice? Thanks

when i put the 351w in my 66 i bought a new dipstick and tube from napa, but the old dipstick tube was in there so tight i just left it in and used the new stick, so from what i can tell the previous owners used a hammer to get it about 3/4 of the way in, thats my experiance with it anyway, if i could do it all over again i would get a new one from lokar through summit. best of luck

I had the same problem. I installed a chrome stick and it was too thick. I took a dremel to the bottom portion to knock down some of the chrome. It actually needed a lot off... eventually I got just enough off to still make it tough to push in so that it wouldn't fall off. Have had no problems.

It's supposed to be a press fit. Are you sure there is no stump of an old tube in the hole? As me how I know.

I have a similar problem. I have a 351 double sump oil pan on my 302. I have a few dip sticks that all fit the side motor entrance dip stick spot but.....they are all different sizes in length.

How do can you tell which is the right one to use? One would say that I needed one more quart of oil the other would tell me that I am over by a quart.

As it is right now, if the motor runs sluggish I drain out some oil thinking that I added too much.

yeah I had to sand the dipstick tube a bit until it fit as well...It did take a bit of time.

Been a long time ago.
Think I used a 289 dipstick/tube in my old style 351W.
I do recall there is more than one 351W timing cover styles.
289 timing cover will not fit.
Previous version edelbrock pump broke my 351W timing cover due to interference.
The box clearly stated pump was for 351W.
New edelbrock pump that looks identical to holley pump fits.

It looks like most of us have dipsticks that are too big for the hole they were intended for...Hey no shame there... I guess its a mustang thing.

That's what she said. But seriously, yeah both the Spectre and Milodon tubes were not only too wide but they were way too wide and I definitely have thought of grinding it down but as mentioned before I think that would take forever and I don't really have the tools to accomplish the task. Maybe I will try grinding down the Spectre tube that I bought, it only cost me $9.50 from summit and if I mess it up, no harm done haha

What ever dip stick you use, change your oil and filter. add 5 qts of oil, start the engine, shut off, check oil level. Mark oil level somehow on your dipstick. That would be Your full mark.
