Default 64.5 260 distributor problem

Folks, I am having an unusually hard time reinstalling my distributor. I cannot get it to seat all the way down. I have tried several different positions for the rotor. I feel i am at TDC and on #1 but it will not seat all the way flush. Know i am missing something easy!!!

Thanks

Need to be sure TDC after #1 cyl compression stroke.
Rotor needs to be positioned to fire #1 plug.
Need to verify oil pump drive shaft in position.

You've done the above I guess?

Did you install new O ring?

Did you install new dist gear?

What I always do is to get the distributor on the right tooth, and then roll the starter a little bit while gently pushing the distributor down.

The distributor gear and the oil pump shaft will usually match up within one turn of the engine and the distributor will drop the last 1/4".

This has worked many times for me.
