hey guys
thinking of getting these:
http://www.cal-mustang.com/TRI-Y-HEADERS-C1019.aspx
dont know much about exhaust systems. wanted to know if installing these are newb friendly.
all i know is that headers replace the exhaust manifold.
what i want to know is:
1. do i need to remove engine to install
2. will they fit with a stock exhaust on a 67 coupe.
3. if i have to remove engine hw hard is that to do.

You will need the front section of your exhaust cut and bent to mate up to the headers..Depending on what you have for exhaust right now it might be a good time to step up to a free flowing dual exhaust setup to really take advantage of the headers...
Hey 001mustang - What system did you have problems with?
I went with the Flowmaster American Thunder based on the experience of another local guy with a 67. Installation was a breeze and the fit is perfect. (Although I must admit that one of my tail pipes hangs about a 1/4" lower than the other. Nobody else seems to mind as much as me.) All hardware was included and the mandrel bends are beautiful.
Anyhow, the problem is that the system was EXPENSIVE at almost $400 (came with super 44's). Times were better when I purchased it and I probably could not again today.

Install was not that difficult.
Fit was fair; can't get the exhaust turn downs to line up.
Uses several ugly exhaust clamps.
Could see black soot from some joints.
Spent time correcting leaky joints.
All in all I would give it a 6 out of 10.
Enter 67 mustang.
Install super easy; cause someone else did it.
Quicko installed 2 1/2" w/ H-pipe.
Cheaper than the above kit.
Fits like a glove.
1st muffler too loud.
They installed another muffler for free.
Clamps used at mount points only.
I would give it a 9 out of 10.
I have installed a similar set in a 66 coupe..They installed very easily on the engine after the exhaust manifolds were removed....No need to remove the engine....I did have a couple of clearance issues however..One was with the bellhousing and the other was with the Z bar.....If you are running an automatic trans you may not have these issues...

manifolds over shorty headers? really?
The comment about shorty headers having clearance issues? Shorty headers are the least likely to have clearance issues. My vote for ease of installationa and sound is install yourself some decent shorty headers for probably same price as manifolds. Then drive down to a muffler shop and have them install an X pipe with mufflers of your choice. here is a video of my 5.0 when it was stock with shorty, xpipe, and 40 series flows.

I took a grinder to the bellhousing and made a small notch for clearance..Sounds bad but it wasn't much of a notch and it was easily done in the aluminium...The Z bar was a little more difficult..I ended up using a Z bar from a 65 that has the adjustable upper push rod..I also used the 66 lower bar that is adjustable as well and fine tuned it until the Z bar was on enough of an angle that I had clearance...Supposedly the HiPo 289 had a special Z bar to clear the HiPo manifolds..These may work with the Tri-Ys without and problems...

Glad you got that Z-bar figured out.
