Car starting conundrum
I've been having somewhat similar issues but have an Edelbrock carburetor. If it sits for a few minutes or less, it starts back up easily. If it sits for an hour or longer it starts back up just by bumping the key. When cold after sitting all week, it can be a little stuborn. The biggest issue is from about 15 minutes up to half hour or so. It acts flooded. I'm thinking its heat related too, but my underhood temps are not that hot. I don't have a carb spacer yet, but plan on getting the thinner one Edelbrock offers.
Hey bud, try backing off your timing a couple of degrees. My car did this same thing when i first rebuilt the engine.. it would start only after stumbling into the start for about 20 seconds with me feathering the gas. Just mark your dizzy position with something, then move it a degree or two (12 to 10 btdc) as an example... Then once you get it set reset your idle and tune with a vaccume gauge for highest vac. That will get you going good. When you get out here give me a call and we will retune your carb to the 10% ethanol crap gas you get in hawaii.
Thank you! Thats if the guys in Hawaii let me take my car out of the in-bound holding yard. It's like driving a race car, I don't know how they'll take it once they start poking around under the hood and I have to get a safety sticker.

May help (watch out for hood clearance); it did not solve the problem.
I figure heat rises and will find a way to vaporize bowl fuel.
In the first few minutes after parking some fuel may boil and find its way into the intake; producing a rich mix upon startup.
After much time all the fuel will vaporize and leave the bowl bone dry. eventually fuel will exit intake and leave you w/ no fuel charge for start up.
Blocking the intake manifold exhaust cross over will remove a heat source from under carb; a good thing.
I put thick heat insulator gasket under carb.

I don't think I have hood clearance for a taller insulator than that 3/8 Edelbrock one.
I believe that my Edelbrock Performer RPM intake doesn't have the exhaust crossover. I have this one.
