Default Help with restoring 68 Mustang

Hello,

In the last year I have been working on restoring my 68 Mustang, as you may remember so me of my posts here from about a year ago. The car is moving along and is almost ready for the paint job. As you may remember I decided to make it a GT clone. I am also making it a red interior car from its original black. I have most of the red parts, however I am in need of an accurate picture that shows all the parts that have to be made red.

Also, about the GT clone, I want everything but the c stripe and so I am not doing it. I am just wondering if it was possible to order the car GT without the C stripe cause that would make me feel better about not doing it.

My last dilemma has to do with the tachometer. I wanted to install the tach but could not find one. However I did install the wiring harness that works with the tach and fog lamps. My question is for the time being I am going to put the regular gauges back in, will I be able to wire them up with the tachometer harness? If you look at the gauges with a tach, the oil pressure and voltage gauges are deleted, so I am worried I may not be able to wire these? Is that correct? I just would like to be able to install the tach when I come across the right cluster.

Thanks for your help.

John

All of it. Seats, panels, headliner, carpet, belts, dash pad… Only the black 'camera case' part of the dash won't be red. It's a lotta red.

According to Ford literature, you could order the 67 stripe instead. Never seen one. I suspect they may have dropped this, since no one wanted the 'old' stripe. Why don't you want the stripe? All 68 GT's and Sprints had it. Very cool.

My last dilemma has to do with the tachometer. I wanted to install the tach but could not find one. However I did install the wiring harness that works with the tach and fog lamps. Connecting the cluster will be a problem, because the connectors were different. Get the wiring harness for the tach cluster, and you can get away with it. Of course, your oil pressure and amp won't work.

Default Red interior

The complete interior is red, but more than one color is used. Plastic parts use one color and metal parts use another. The biggest difference seems to be the metal paint has some flake in it. The plastic paint matches the vinyl seats very closely. Additionally the trim at the back of the dash pad appears to be a bit different that the rest of the car. If you have any specific questions let me know I am in the process of completely restoring my red interior and provide pics of any part.

I am also switching to a Tach and have researched this quite a bit. Did you modify or replace your dash wiring for the Tach? If not you will have to do it before you can use a Tach cluster as the wiring and connectors are different. Unfortunately Ford somehow managed to omit the tach wiring from all of their published materials including the service manual. A few people have reverse engineered it and it can be found on the web.

This was not a deliberate attempt to use different colors. More like the kick panels were molded red, steering wheel molded red, pressed door panels, painted doors, painted rear panels, etc. If the plastic parts are even close you are OK, and of course the dash pad was darker. If you have the lower dash pad, it was lighter to match the painted portion.
