p/o was a tard
I've had my 65 since I was 16 (now 30) and haven't been able to spend much time on it until recently. Now that I have a li'l more know-how (and the patience t'do it right) I'm finding out exactly how half-assed the previous owner did things. My current problem(one of 'em, anyway) is that nothing happens when you turn the key. nothing. I've checked the usual suspects... starter, solenoid, alternator, battery obviously, and started checking wiring(clusterf***)I got to the neutral safety switch, and discovered TWO. One of them spliced in, with two extra wires not doing anything, the other is also bolted to the shifter, but the plug at the other end just hangin'. Anyway, my problem is that every time I research the switch I find an unfamiliar switch. I've got a B&M shifter on an automatic transmission, is the different shifter why the switch doesn't look the same, or is the p/o more retarded than I gave him credit for? the switch(es) in my car is this little plastic thing, but all I find are metal half moons with a hole in 'em. What don't I know?(it's a long list, so be nice)
After careful consideration, and having had to repair several B&M auto shifters, I have decided the B&M shifter is a POS compared to a properly assembled and adjusted original Ford shifter.
However, the NS on a C4 is mounted on the trans, not the shifter.
Your problem is wiring. Typical. If it's rough, I'd consider simply replacing it, the repro wiring is excellent. I'd consider finding a Ford shifter, too.
This is just one more reason I think teenagers (your likely PO) should not be allowed to buy or own wire cutters.

I think you might be right about the previous owner though. That's actually why I haven't made more progress in my time owning it, I love my mustang and wasn't willing to screw it up taking on something i wouldnt/couldnt do properly
thanks, i'm not too sure about this shifter m'self. I've been learning alot about my baby, and it's amazing how simple these beautys really are once you start to understand how things work together. That's not to say I've got it all figured out. Not by a long shot. But I'm not so concerned about my inexperience puttin' her in the grave. I appreciate any help I can get from guys that've been down that road.
i'm a wild and crazy guy.
i fixed my NSS.
i keep a plug-in NSS jumper in car just in case; no fun when it fails at wrong time.
sorry but the jumper is plugged in now..so i just have to be smart enough to start in park or N.

Sorry, I have nothing to contribute to the NSS discussion. The previous owner discussion, however...
When I got my '66, I kept smelling fuel for awhile after I'd fill up with gas. Come to find out, the gas tank had a hole in the top. They thought it'd be a good idea to fiberglass over it!
