Default Electrical woes..

I just had to replace my voltage regulator and ended up getting a smaller regulator that looks like it is a version without the points and coils that the original had.. however I am putting out 14.7-15.2 volts constantly and that is a little high. So has anyone used this regulator? Has it lasted longer than the original type? I usually only got abou a year out of a regulator. Any clues why it was like that.
