Default Do I need a new starter??

I purchased a 1965 Mustang coupe last summer with a 200 c.i. inline 6 and once I got it running I noticed that I have to rev it up a little when it starts to disengage the starter. The car has very good cranking power and the starter appears to be pretty new. I took it off and greased the gear and reinstalled but I still have to rev the car right after starting to disengage the starter. Once I do this it is fine. Do I need a new starter to fix this? Is there something else I can do to the starter to cure this problem? I hate to throw out this starter if I don't have to.
