Cool straight pipes, 1970 fastback

hello fellow mustang enthusiasts, i have a bit of a dilemma. See, the kid that i got my mustang from put catalytic converters on (and i **** you not) and i was going to run either a magnaflow catback system, or just run straight pipes. I am pretty sure the cops here in chantilly, virginia don't care about american muscle with straight pipes, but does anyone know if this is legal before i make a mistake??? thanks for the assist guys

You have catalytic converters on a 1970 Mustang? That's a new one. I'd cut 'em off and recycle them in an orderly, legal manner.

It actually may be dangerous to be running the cats on your mustang..They normally require heat shields on the underside of the car due to the extreme heat they put off..

ok, so i have made up my mind, i am going to run straights. anyone know where or what type i should put on??? i work at toyota so no problem with assembly or lifts or what not. plus i am a high school kid so price would be "kind of" important but not that big of an issue. AND I KNOW I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE A PAIR OF CATS THERE!!!

I don't know why anyone would put cats on a classic Mustang. Are you sure they are cats and not bullet mufflers or small glass packs?

I'd sell that cats. You can get a few bucks for them.

I know several people that run straight pipes on their classic muscle cars and don't have any issues.

I would run straight pipes all the way out the back. I would not do turn downs etc. That will sound the best and the longer pipe will muffle it a little.

Another option that my friend did was to use Warlock mufflers that are kind of like turbo mufflers but they have a provision on the back that opens up like straight pipes. He put electric cutouts on them so he can be loud or quiet.

yea, i've thought about warlocks, but ive heard too many people say that they got tired of having them too quiet when they're capped and the annoying noise when they're uncapped, so they just ended up getting rid of them. i'm still kind of set on the straight pipes but i dont know if i would lose any performance or not or if it would even be noticable :/

I currently have straight pipes that run all the way back on my 66 coupe. I had an exhaust shop custom bend everything from the manifolds back. If I remember right it ran me around $300. However I would think carefully before deciding to do it. I was warned the car would be extremely loud but at the time I felt like it was the thing to do. After a few years and barely being able to hear the radio I am debating installing a set of mufflers. The car is just down right obnoxious with straight pipes. Maybe I am just getting old but it is way too excessive for me right now.
