Inline 6 Upgrades???
Yeah, stay away from engine swaps when dealing with a 6 cylinder car unless you're switching it out with another 6. V8 swaps are overrated, difficult, and not worth it. If you want a V8 car, buy a V8 car. There's nothing wrong with keeping it a 6, especially with 4 dollar a gallon gasoline.
The first step to improving your six cylinder's performance is to add a set of split headers with a port divider from Clifford Performance. Doing this increases your horsepower by about 20%, and gives you a good sound from the dual exhausts. I ran my split headers through Flowmaster 40s, and you cannot tell that it isn't a v8.
What I did next was replaced the single bbl Autolight 1100 with a Holley 5200 2 bbl. When adjusted properly, this REALLY wakes your engine up. And not only does this increase your power and torque, but it helps out with the driveability of the engine, too.
I'm also looking to replace the points with an electronic ignition system, which should improve the driveability also.
So headers and a 2bbl should increase your horsepower by ~25%-30%. Depending on how much money you want to spend, adding an aluminum cylinder head will improve it even more.

Well I did the I6 to V8 upgrade. Kind of an endless money drain. But then this is a hobby, right?
I had the engine custom built from a guy in the Detroit area that has done a few of these. Talking about $3,000 for an engine. 4 BBL Holly carb, hyper type cam, Endelbrok intake manifold. Nice Ford Racing logo stamped on the head covers and air cleaner.
Couple hundred for a exhaust system (tri-Y headers).
About $300 for a radiator. Good electric fan. Then upgrade from there. New 3.0 rear. Disc front brakes and a 1 inch Shelby drop.
I can make some noise with the tires in first and second.

true, and i kind sometimes regret getting rid of the i6 for the 289 thats waiting to go in the stang. i would have the 6 built and on the road already and having fun with her. oh well still could sell the v8 and get another 200 or 250
