turn signal problem
My turn signals just went out on me the other day. The emergency flashers work, brake lights work and running lights work. I thought maybe the flasher went out and heard that the one for the emergency flashers is interchangeable with the one for the turn signals so I tried swapping them (they are not easy to get to!) but I still have the same problem.
What is the next most likely problem? I guess it could e the switch, looks like I have to remove the steering wheel to get to that. Is there a fuse that just controls the turn signals? I can't read anything on the fuse block.

When you hit the signal lever can you feel the switch "click" into place? I hate to say but all the signal lights go through the signal switch. If the cam doesn't move to the correct location then the flasher is not put in the circuit to start the "flashing" of the lights.
Seeing as you already replaced the flasher.

Before you take the column apart, verify that you are getting power to the signal switch.
If you are getting power into the column with the key on and the brake pedal NOT depressed, chances are it will be the switch.

I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that I was getting power to the switch because my emergency flashers are working and it looks like that is all part of the same switch. When I push the turn signal lever up or down it feels like it is engaging the switch (it locks in place) but I don't get any signal on the dash or from the lights. If I push in the emergency flasher switch all four lights flash.
The black fuse connected to it may have came loose. If it's not that, the fuse may have a short or in it or it is just a bad fuse all together. You might need to check the fuse box or you could have a problem with the connection with the light switch. I hope you figure it out. Good luck!
A fuse with a short? That would be a new one on me. Fuses either pass voltage or they overload and open up so they don't pass voltage. No such thing as a shorted fuse. I would verify all the fuses in the block with a light or meter and make sure you have voltage on both sides with the key in the on position. It really sucks to think you have a bad turn signal switch, you go through all the trouble to replace it and it turns out not to be the switch. Ask me how I know that lesson learned.
from the wiring diagram:
1.it seems from the diagram that emergency flasher is a different fuse than the normal indicator. it seems the indicators are on the same fuse as backup light switch and wipers
So if backup lights and wiper don't work then go check the fuse
2. if you can rule this out and if you have a testlight,, you'll see theres a red cable from fuse and that splits to the flasher (orange/yellow cable at flasher).
you should have constant 12V+ there.
On the other side of flasher you have flashing 12V+
so if you connect testlight to ground with clamp and probe the orange/yellow at flasher the testlight should light (with ignition on I think, not checked)
when you probe the blue one at flasher the testlight should flash. this way you know the flasher is ok.
You can interchange them for a test as you did. it will only cause the lights to go slower or quicker. depending which way around you swapped.
from there the blue cable goes to your indicator switch in column. that will switch the 'flashing 12V+' towards green/orange or orange/blue to go towards the indicator lamps
So from all that is said I'd say as well problem with the switch. But you can always probe the green/orange and orange/blue coming from lightswitch if you can get at them to be sure
