Default my first mustang!!

Hey guys I just bought my first mustang project! I got this 65 fastback the other day for a really good deal. It was recently sandblasted and primed for a new paint job. It is just a shell but it comes with a 302 engine that needs to be rebuilt along with a automatic tran. Where would you guys start first with this? Also where is the best place to buy seats for these?

If the floor and frames are nice and no further repairs are needed I would start the paint process and build it from that point.

Yeah it has no rust at all on at all....it has a few minor body work that needs to be done....I need to find a good local place to do the paint work that will not charge me a ton of money

Dang that is really nice for a first Mustang. Paint and body would be first but I would start taking inventory of what you have. When they are torn apart like that stuff always comes up missing.

Remember that buying reproduction seat frames are very expensive. I would recommend going to a junk yard and getting some seat frames from an old Mustang. The condition of the upholstery or foam doesn't matter, because reproduction upholstery and foam can be bought pretty cheap. I just wouldn't recommend buying any repro frames. Upholstering seats is difficult, but once you learn it it's a valuable skill to have for any future car builds.

When doing these projects, remember that companies like National Parts Depot and CJ Pony Parts are your best friends. These are the only two companies I deal with: NPD has the best customer service, so I order all of my big stuff from them. CJ Pony Parts is usually the cheapest and they offer free shipping on all small stuff, so I order all of my small stuff from them.

I would start with getting the engine and transmission ready for the car. After you get your mechanics worked out, get the body work done. If there's any rust on the car, fix it then. After the body is ready, get the exterior of the car painted. The price of the paintjob can vary so much it isn't even worth mentioning any prices. If you're looking for the best paint job for the price, a Maaco job shouldn't be out of question. Before people scream at me for suggesting Maaco, remember that a paintjob is all about preparation. Learn how to prep the car for paint, and then let Maaco spray it. It won't be as good as a $10,000 paint job, but it's the best you're going to get for under a couple thousand dollars. Maaco gets a bad reputation because people take their car there without having done any work to it, they hand the shop a few 100 dollar bills, and expect show car results. That doesn't happen. If you want to save money on a good paintjob, do the prep work yourself.

also remember that maaco is a franchise so different shops will have different quality work. maaco paint jobs can go up to 4k$ i believe so not exactly cheap.
