Post Engine tuning Carb issues .

Hello i have a 289 engine i have installed an edelbrock performer manifoldhttp://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=EDL21211+01 and a edelbrock 500cmf 4 barrel carbhttp://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=EDL1404+01
and an edelbrock racing fuel pump http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...?T1=EDL1725+01

The problems i have is that i have very hard time to get the car to start , when it starts i have black smoke and it stinks of gas , when the i rev the car on neutral its ok although before i had spot on response now it little slower in response , when i have it in gear and i hit the petal the engine stalls and it stops .
Please advise me
thank you

Carb too rich in the idle circuit maybe, prolly the accelerator pump and jetting.

Put your old pump back on. 500cfm doesnt need a high volume pump. After the old pump is on look inside the carb, when running, for gas pouring down the venturi. The eddy carbs are very fuel pressure sensitive and prefer lower pressure.

A high volume pump won't matter as long as the fuel pressure is right. If the fuel pressure is correct the needle will close on the seat and regulate fuel flow. The Edelbrock pumps have built in pressure regulators that are pretty accurate.
