351c for $400...good deal?

I am about to drop a 351W in my 67 coupe within a week. I did a little research and found that there is not a ton of difference between the Windsor and the Cleveland. I found that this webpage helped a little on comparing the 351's: http://www.carmemories.com/cgi-bin/v...erience_id=132. One of the main differences between the two is that the cleveland was made in Cleveland (complicated isn't it?) and the windsor was made in Windsor, Ontario.
But i got a question myself.... what trany were you going to drop in... i don't think my 289 trany will harness the power output of a 351w. the one i am going to buy is actually a stock 69 engine and i was told that $400 would not be bad

There are about 3 things in common between the C and W.
Bore, stroke and head bolt pattern. Other than that, completely different beasts.
You can bolt C heads onto a W block with a few mods and parts though.

Here is my take on the "C" vs. "W" thing...
Clevelands were a better factory motor for performance than a Windsor due to their better head design, however, I think that the availability of well priced aftermarket heads and other part has made this issue a non-issue.
For the record, I think a Cleveland is "cooler" because of their rarity, but not better by any measure. Still, If I fell into the right one, I would build one.

would you suggest a C or W? also aren't C's a tighter fit and heaver when i can make the same power from a W. i read that a W has thicker cylinder walls over a C. btw i like the color. burnt amber? my original color is burnt amber, when i repaint the car im bringing it back to that original color
C or W really comes down to what you want to do. If your goal is a fun driver with good power at a good price a C can be cheaper to build. Intake, exaust, cam and bigger carb and you can easily get to 350hp with a very close to stock rebuild. A close to stock build will cost 1500-2000. This would be the same price that you would pay to build a close to stock W and the W would have less power.
Now if you are wanting to build a beast the W will be cheaper to build because go fast parts are alot cheaper and easier to buy.
It really comes down to what your goals are with the car.

Since I am also looking for my new engine I would say to keep looking. On craigslist i found a 351C with oil pan, carb, and trany. All for 400 and in near perfect condition. Might need a tune up and thats it. So like i said earlier its not a bad buy but there are better. Hope this helps.

thanks for the info guys...i definitely want this to be a beast. i have a 69 mach1 9 inch rear fully built up going into the car, getting my c4 rebuilt. im lookin for 550 hp/ ftlbs. the 351C is out of a 70 mach1 and hasnt ran since 84. its all original but he's not sure if it has 4valve heads. i only want it for the block tho, and if it has 4valve heads should i use those too? what would you guys offer for this motor? 250?

"4V" has a different meaning now than it did in the 60s and 70s, ...
4V meant a "4 venturi carb", or a 4 barrel carb, not 4 valves per cylinder.
The port size on the 4V Cleveland heads is quite large, but I would run em.
Just for clarification, IMO the Cleveland motor is a superior design to the Windsor, but since the Windsor was cheaper to make that is what Ford made for 40 years, hence more aftermarket support.....
But for what it is worth, I think both Ford small blocks are a better design than the SBC....

How far you want to travel for a motor? I have a 351w out of a 77 Versallies, stripped bare with crank & rods. Crank and rods look good, the block will need machining. Just looking to get my original $100 out of it. Got a spare c4 you can take that too, part of the deal. Also have a whole bunch of accys, timing covers and brackets, bring a truck and get them out of here I'm in 07750
Ford heads stink for making power, already took them to the scrap yard.
