Default Back up light switch

Good evening all and Happy Labor Day!!

I'm a newbee here so bare with me. I tried a search for this answer to my question but didn't see a discussion on this.

I ve been working on my 66 GT fastback with factory four speed and noticed someone has removed the back up light switch off the transmission. I have ordered the switch and bracket and finally found wiring rolled up under the dash. My question is where does the wiring go through floorboard and is bracket mounted from above or below?

Thanks
Steve

The switch mounts on the shifter, and the wiring comes through the floor just to the rear of the shifter hole.

Thanks so much, I've not had the boot off the shifter. Is this accessible from the top.

No. Additionally, the 66 is supposed to have a lower shift boot, to protect the shifter and reduce heat and noise inside the car. I linked a 65, for clarity on the shifter. This is the lower shift boot:

Going to tackle this this weekend, lower boot install from the top, I hope. I know I'm begging here but do you happen to remember the bolt size that holds the back up light bracket on? I see you have a lock washer.

It is impossible to install the lower boot from the top. You'd have to slice it to shreds.

To install the lower boot, remove the upper boot. Disconnect the shift rods from the shifter. Disconnect the shift lever from the shifter. Remove the shifter from the trans. Drop the shifter into the boot, making sure the levers go through the slots in the boot. Install the switch, with a 1/4-20 bolt. Attach the shifter to the trans. Attach the rods to the shifter. Pull the lip around the top of the lower boot, against the floor. Attach the shift lever to the shifter. Place the upper boot on the lower boot, make sure the lower boot does not wrinkle, and insert the screws through the upper and lower boots, and tighten. Pass the switch wire through the hole in the floor, and connect.(64-66 only)

Thank you for the very clear response 2+2. Little nervous about pulling linkage off, but i'll give it a shot.

Take your time, you'll be fine. Don't remove the adjusting nut, leave them on the rods, disconnect the trunnions from the lever on the shifter. That way, you won't even need to adjust the shifter when you're done.
