Default Pardon my metallic ignorance, but......

Question.

While stripping 44 years of road grime from the front spindles I realized there is no rust on these pieces.........pardon my ignorance on the matter, but exactly what kind of metal were the spindles made from? There is rust on every other piece I remove from the front.......except the spindles.....doesn't even seem to be surface rust.......just grime......and I am quite sure they are original.

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm...........

high quality steel, simple as that. look at a hydraulic cylinder that has been left outside for years, the inner cylinder is as shiny as the day it was made

Likely the grime you had to take off was partially a factory petroleum based coating, that protected the spindle. This plus the "new grime" added constantly did a good job.

The hydraulic rams mentioned above, ARE almost always top notch steel, but what actually keeps them from rusting is a very durable industrial chrome plating.

Unfortunately, since chrome plating is all but illegal in the USA these days, I doubt that many or any of these rams are made here anymore....

Thanks, you are probably right. I sprayed them with a Rustolem rust protector of some sorts and then painted over that.

With my luck they'll probably start seriously rusting next week..............:-(

I am sure the Rustoleum will do the job. I think it is a great paint for chassis parts, underside, etc.
