Default Rear Ratio Calculation

Hello everyone!

I got a rear from a friend and he couldn't remember what the ratio is. There is no tag on it. The tooth count is 39 on the ring and 14 on the pinion.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

39/14=2.78
seems right, being that 2.78 is a number i've seen tossed around here at times for gear ratios

That's what I thought, I just wanted to be sure. I am taking out the original 3.00 rear and putting this one in. It was rebuilt a few years ago but never put in a car.

Thanks!

I love this forum!!!

Firt time I've heard of anyone going from 3.00 to 2.79! You'll get fractionally better mileage but you will also be a little slower off the line.

Seems a bit counter productive to go with a taller gear since performance will suffer.

It could be the case that his rear end is shot and he needs a cheap replacement. He did say he go it from a friend rebuilt (maybe paid next to nothing for it). Or it could be a daily driver and he doesn't value performance as much as he does fuel economy. Just throwing some thoughts out there in his defense
