I am needing to start thinking about the rear end for my 65 and have started adding up the numbers and I had no idea I would be spending this much!!! I am in the process of installing some wider inner fender wells so I can tuck my 275 and know I will have to narrow a rear end to get the look I want. I now have a stock 8", but was looking at buying a 9" off craigslist for 100.00. To fix it I will need axles, machine shop time to cut down and weld on perches, a new third member to get rid of the 2.75, new brake parts, bearings, seals....Im looking at 2000.00. I know I will have to do this to my 8" if I was to keep it, so why not go to a 9"? I think I will be running around 400 HP and I also want Posi Trac. Any cheaper ideas? Thanks, Brent

You'll need the 9". You don't actually want 'posi-traction,' as that's a GM product. I'd recommend either an Eaton TrueTrac (worm-gear differential) for street or track use. For abusive street/strip use, stick with a Detroit Locker.

And no, there isn't really a cheaper way to do all of that. When you want something custom, you have to be able to pull out that pocket book.

Have you looked at quickperformance.com a brand new housing that fits with axles is 680 and a center section ready to bolt in 975 that comes up to 1655 not sure they charge shipping.But if you want a center section cheaper you can get a used one off racingjunk.com i bet.

Check speedwaymotors.com also, figure out what width rear you need first, there may already be a 9" in the right width. Also watch CL and fleabay. If you get the housing in the right length you would eliminate the cutting/custom axles and you can get built to your gears 9" 3rd members on fleabay or else where all the time. Stay with as much as does not have to be custom to save.

That or put mini tubs in, I've seen some added that didn't change the interior.

Lol.. I know of a couple ways not to build a rear end if you want to know those..

-dont try to rush it yourself and then dont yorque the pinion nut 12 times too tight which welds the bearing to the pinion flange..

-dont waste money on crappy gears and then pay somone 200$ cash to put them in only to realize that they howl like hell on the freeway.. and then dont be too cheap to get it fixed..

Do.. pay to get quality parts and quality work by a quality professional.
