Default Painting

For all you guys who have painted using a spray gun and a compressor:

1. Do all paints need to be cut with a reducer, even primer?

2. If most paints need to be cut can you buy primer or other paint that doesn't need to be?

3. Is there really an advantage to using a spray gun for primer over the can stuff?

4. Any painting advice anyone wants to offer?

Thanks

Phil

well we had a big discussion about this. First I would say that the spray kind is bad quality and might cost more versus buying it by the gallon. heres what I posted This talks about pretty much everything about sanding and primer. It doesnt talk about cutting the paint.

I'm looking more for info about the technique for preparing the paint. I'm all set on when and where to use it. Just looking to see the advantages.

The dupont etching primer is pretty quality if you need to get primer out of a can.

It depends on the system, but most likely yes. Eastwood makes a self etching primer that's already thinned, but you might not want to use it with your paint system. With PPG's Basecoat/Clearcoat system, the primer is thinned I think 50% with reducer. The basecoat and clearcoat are also thinned 50% with reducer.

It actually works better this way, because you double the amount of paint you have by putting cheaper reducer. Think of it this way, a quart of PPG basecoat is 30-40 bucks, and a gallon of reducer is 10-20. You end up not needing as much paint. On my jeep, I painted the rear quarter panel and a hood with a quart, and still had paint left over to do a fender.
