Default 66 mustang project

Just thought id drop in and tell everyone about what i am building, its a father and son project. i got the car for graduation and I am really big into mustangs. Most of the time I am on the other section of this forum for my 98 mustang. But anyway the car is a 66 mustang coupe 289.

I am actually at a dilemma right now about the motor, it has a 289 torn out of it at the moment with the upgraded 289 4 barrel intake. It is not the k-code motor. i have been debating on rebuilding this motor or just buying a 302 to build up.. I am looking for around 330-340hp. A few people i have talked to said if it was not the k-code 289, to just get rid of it and go with a 302. They have said that i will spend lots of money trying to get the 289 to that amount of power. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

The car is actually away for a little bit getting soda blasted to start the body work, it does not need that much. Ill post pictures soon enough! Thank you in advance!

I don't understand what "they" mean about the 289. The only difference inside or out between the 289 and 302 is the 302 had a 1/8" longer stroke.

Considering you can get upwards of 350 hp from a 289 without even going with exotic modern parts, using OEM iron heads, etc., you might want to consider listening to "them" less.

A guy near here did a budget build of a 67 289 2V:

• Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
• 600 cfm carb
• Stock distributor recurved to BOSS 302 specs
• C9OZ-6250-C hydraulic cam
• Port-matching of the exhaust ports to headers (his first time, done in the garage)

Nothing else. No exotic valve train, no roller cam, no fancy ignition system.

Results? 323.5 hp @ 5300.

Yeah, those 289's, real dogs.

Could you send me a link to that please? If you can find it easily, if not I'll try to find it myself. But thanks a lot for the quick reply and for the information. My dad and I were thrown around big time on random inputs from bunches of people and were wagering our options.. But I think I will keep the 289 and build it up, seeing what you have said and hopefully the thread too. Thanks again!

So the block wasn't bored at all either? Because we were planning on .30 over on the block. Like I said, I'd be happy with 330-340hp range.

use this if you want. just add a 302 crankshaft and rods..

Should get you 340ish HP to the wheels.. If you're not happy with that just use forged parts and a 75 - 100 shot of NOS should be safe to use whenever. I have a 289 for my mustang I'm working on and thats the build I'm going to use.. Not sure what transmission you're going to use but I reccomend an AOD / Gear vendors.. (if automatic) may aswell do it now rather than after the car is done
