71 fastback starting problem.

71 fastback starting problem.
So the question is:
My 71 fastback starts only when i connect the electric cables to the battery.Its pretty much manuel so for me to turn off the car i have to get under the hood and disconnect the cables from the battery.
I changed the solenoid recently perhaps, i could of connected the I AND the S cables wrong but i doubt it.
Or my other theory would be that my actual ignition key system is having problems.
anyways I would appreciate your help.
