Just curious....but what advantage(s) would the T-5 (or TKO) have over a Toploader. The reason I ask...I have a '65 with a moderately-built 289 (about 300 hp) that is running a 3.50 gear 9" rearend and Toploader 4-speed that came out of a 1969 Mustang with a 428. To me, my first gear seems a little "tall", compared to a similar setup I had once with a Borg-Warner T-10. Don't know if one of those Tremec 5-speeds would be worth the switch...some day.

Only thing I've heard of is the ability to run at higher speeds with less revs on the engine. I ran a toploader for years and it did well with 3.25 rear.

Can you find a tag on your toploader? It's number might indicate whether you have the wide ratio (2.7x first gear) or the close ratio (2.5x first gear).
The T5 has the overdrive 5th gear for less revs on the highway.

most of the 5.0 guys run 4.10s or 3.73s with the t5 trans..i have a 3.55 gear set in my 91 5.0 and wish i had the 4.10s to really get me moving off the line

Yeah...my toploader has a tailhousing with a C70R-etc. part number, and the main housing has a tag with RUG-AE2. According to David Kee's website, it is a close-ratio 31-spine model. In fact, I actually talked with Kee by telephone about this tranny, and he seemed to think it was not a good match (the close-ratio) for a '65 Mustang with a 289.
