Wiring through 66 steering column
I'm replacing the turn signal switch and attached wires in my 66 coupe. I cannot figure out how to get the collar at the top of the column on without damaging the wires. I ran the wires down thru the collar which holds the switch, then into the "trough" inside the column. Please see picture here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Okay, I got the wiring run through the column but let me explain a problem. When you look at my picture the hole in the column is closed at the top end of the channel. In other words I could put the wires in to that hole and feed them down the column, but the was no opening at the top of the channel. After watching the video I decided to "open" the top of the channel. I did this by inserting a flat bladed screwdriver down thru the top of the column and bending the channel end up toward the steering shaft so I could run the wires down thru the collar, into the channel and out the bottom of the shaft. It doesn't seem that it would be necessary to do this modification. The top of the channel appeared to be made that way (closed).
So thanks for your help, my problem is solved but really not the way I think it should have been.......good forum!
Thanks again,
Jim

The video is very accurate and James, I've never seen the situation that you've explained in my active years as an auto electrical tech. The one thing the guy in the video does wrong (IMO) is he doesn't tie a string or a piece of wire onto the old wiring before he removes it. This extra string/wire is how you pull the wiring back down the column track without having to disassemble the column down so far.

james, can you post a photo of your fix? I just did a rewire of my 66 and didn't have the issue you are talking about. From your first picture it looks like the issue is that you didn't slide the collar on first. In that picture you would need to pull the wires out, put the outer "cone" part on and slide it down the column a bit, feed the wires through the upper part of the steering column (where the switch actually bolts to). Then you would feed the wires around the side and through the tunnel. After that you slide the cone part back up, bolt it to the upper part and then install the two screws that hold the two collar parts together.
Sounds really convoluted, but it wasn't very difficult and for sure didn't require me to use a screw driver to make adjustments.
