Default Locking Differential for Cougar Rear End

As I had posted earlier, I picked up a 9" rear end out of a 1970 Cougar to install in my 68 fastback. I plan to upgrade to a locking differential and new 3.50 gears when I have the center unit rebuilt.

I noticed when I sorted differential carriers for Ford 9" on the Summit Racing website, there were about 15 choices but if I sorted by Mercury 9" there was on 4 choices. I guess I thought the Ford and Mercury 9" rear end carriers were basically the same. Puzzled why there were so few choices for the Mercury rear end. I just want to be sure that unit I buy will fit my carrier.

Based on the information I found on this forum, decided on the Detroit TrueTrac unit unless someone has a better suggestion.

Thanks!

9" is 9", so far as I'm aware. The choices that show might be what was available for Vehicles that carried that 9". There probably weren't a lot of choices for Mercury, because not many vehicles in the Mercury line carried 9" rear axles for very long, and with very many models.

Wheres 9" was available on a lot of Fords for a lot longer.

Make sure you don't go the cheap rout with the ring and pinion. With a Trac-Lok rear axle, if you buy cheap ones, they can be very chatty and have a lot of noise.

Thanks Waffles.

Going with Richmond ring and pinion set.
