Spark Plug Firing Order
Based on what I think I'm hearing, you need to take step back and identify where plug #1 is on your distributor. Everything worked until you changed the wires.
Don't get hung up that #1 plug wire is always "9 O'Clock" (or any other position, for that matter). Plug #1 should be located wherever the rotor is pointing when you are at TDC.
Once you bump (or turnover) the engine to TDC, then put the #1 plug wire at the point where your rotor is pointing. Continue with the wiring the plugs according to the firing order counter clockwise.
On another note, did you pull the distributor or mess with timing during your time under the hood?
Good luck.
